First mentioned in 993 in a Diploma issued by Otto III, conferring his personal property in Varzi to the Monastery of San Colombano of Bobbio. The marquisate of Varzi was instituted in 1275, on the occasion of the division of assets among the members of the Malaspina family. In 1320, the Malaspinas issued rules for their estates, promulgated by a wise and knowledgeable person: Alberto Del Pozzo. The gradual decay of the family had no impact on the prosperity of Varzi, which remained the trade centre of the valley and one of the major towns in the Oltrepò. The marquisate of Varzi was one of the most important jurisdictions of the Oltrepò, i.e. one of the large estates with ample juridical and fiscal autonomy. When the feudal system was abolished, in 1797, the community was much smaller than today.
